What is Big Data?

Traditionally when managing data, it was for the most part finite. While we often stored large amounts of information, we had control over how it was organized. Information was (and still is) for the most part stored in relational databases also called SQL databases. We had a clear understanding about what specifically was in our data stores, how it was structured, and what fields were dependent on others. In cases where we weren’t sure what values we’d store in our databases, we could at least know what sort of structures we needed and could enforce the integrity of our data.

Data & Analytics

This has changed. With the advent of the internet and new technologies, we have now entered a world of Big Data.

Big data is data that is too large to treat in the same way we used to. While we used to manage data in megabytes, that rapidly increased to gigabytes. No problem there; we’re all used to handling that. However we are now dealing with terabytes of data. To put this into context, a mere kilobyte is is 1024 bytes. A megabyte is 1024 kilobytes, a gigabyte is 1024 megabytes. A terabyte is 1024 gigabytes. In other words, a single terabyte is over one million million bytes. When we have data this large, we cannot use the same tools that we used to. While we could theoretically use SQL databases to handle this, the sheer amount of processing power to handle this amount of would bring our systems to a standstill. And even if we could handle the data this way, it assumes that the information we have access to is consistent in the first place. Methods for handling data now need to be much more flexible.

New methods and tools are needed for handling big data.

We are starting to store data in NoSQL databases (Non structured, non-relational databases) which can handle much higher levels of content without requiring detailed and enforced structures. New NoSQL databases like MongoDB and Cassandra store data in large JSON arrays. While they are less structured, data is much more easily accessed. Of course, traditional SQL databases still have a great deal of utility; if you have data that must maintain a level of integrity, and if you are using transactions for processing data, particularly financial transactions, you still need to be using SQL databases. However the sheer amount of data your business enterprise uses or wishes to use needs to be managed; with all the data available, it would be foolish to not to take advantage of it. With more data comes more business knowledge and opportunities.
